The recent deaths of two Oklahoma City Police dogs have K9 officers in training mode.

The Sergeants are working with two new German Shepherds, to get the department up to full-strength with nine dogs.

OKC Police get all of their German Shepherds from overseas. They are all pure-bred males. Oklahoma City Police use that breed and only males, they say, because they are one of the smartest, most loyal, and easy to train breed of dogs in the world.

Police say they use only males because they are more independent than females.

"This is not just a dog.  This is another police officer.  This dog goes where a lot of officers won't," said Kevin Reager, a member of the OKC K9 unit for the last 17 years.

Reager says the department's nine dogs caught 166 suspects in 2013.
