When every second counts, you have to think fast and take action. A metro father says his 13-year-old son did just that and now he owes him his life.

Jaron Schlechter, 13, says he saw warning signs that made him call 911 on his cell phone without hesitation. His father was having a stroke, and collapsed in the hallway of their home. He could barely talk, or move the right half of his body.

It started as a normal Sunday morning for Jaron and his dad Rick Schlechter. The two were preparing to leave to watch soccer tryouts for a semi pro team.

"All of a sudden, he just starts running back and forth between his bedroom and the living room. Then, all of a sudden, he just plops down in the hallway. He starts holding his right wrist just like this," said Jaron.

Jaron called 911.

911 Operator: "Norman 911, what is the address of your emergency?"

Jaron: "My dad, he's like spazing out. I don't know what's wrong."

911 Operator: "Is there anyone else in the house with you."

Jaron: "No, it's just us two. Send someone."

911 Operator: "I am sending someone."

Jaron: "Dad, help is on the way, okay. We're going to be okay dad. Dad, someone's coming OK."

Jaron lives with his father in Norman. His mother and 5-year-old brother live in South Dakota. He says they've had a tough past with medical issues. In 2010, Rick was diagnosed with cancer in his tonsils. The cancer was gone within a couple of months.

"We're all we really got right now," said Jaron.

"I would not have made that," said Jaron's father, Rick. "I wouldn't have made it."

Jaron's father says his son saved his life.

"I couldn't do anything, and he did everything for us," said Rick.

Jaron says he wants it to be clear, he doesn't want the focus to be on what he did, he just wants his father to get better.

Jaron's dad will continue physical therapy at Norman Regional Medical Center.
