An associate professor of history at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha said he's joining a growing Republican field in the race for the state's open U.S. Senate seat.

Kevin Crow told The Associated Press on Friday that he is a candidate for the seat that is being vacated early by U.S. Senator Tom Coburn. Crow planned to formally announce his candidacy at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Canadian Valley Technology Center in Chickasha.

The 45-year-old Crow has never run for public office, and said he's running primarily because of the significance that a U.S. senator's decisions have on people's lives.

Crow joins two-term U.S. Rep. James Lankford, former Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon, and at least two other GOP hopefuls in the race.
