Injury Survey To Be Released At OKC Tornado Summit

The annual Tornado Summit will be hosted in Oklahoma City on Monday. A survey set to be released hopes to shed light on safety.

During the summit, experts will release results of a survey on injuries from the May 20 tornado. The Oklahoma State Health Department heard from about 500 people who survived. They learned about a third of them were in shelters, a third of them were not, and the remaining people left the area to escape or were at work.

More than half of them were treated for injuries. What was surprising is how many still got hurt despite having a safe room or storm shelter.

"The ones that are underground getting up and down the steps, maybe look at how those are manufactured and see what kind of risk are associated with how those are set up, and making sure people can safely get in and out of those shelters," Sheryll Brown said.

Officials hope the survey will encourage people to talk about their emergency plans.

What's promising is that we now have better ways of being warned: TV and sirens, of course. But now people rely on text messaging, social media and tornado apps. The more ways we can be warned about a tornado, the more people are taking shelter.
