NORMAN, Oklahoma -

A Norman family said they are outraged with their school district.

15-year-old Shyla Holt said she was attacked by another female student between classes at Norman High School.

Holt's grandmother and legal guardian, Joy Metts, said the school's response to her granddaughter's injuries is unacceptable.

"The biggest thing that really makes me mad is them waiting an hour and a half to call me and not giving her medical attention immediately," Metts said.

Holt said she was walking to class last Wednesday when the girl attacked her.

"Came up behind me and grabbed my hair and threw me to the ground and just started beating the crap out of me," Holt described the attack.

Holt said she fractured her nose, had bruises around her eyes and her lip was bleeding.

Metts said she feels like the school waited too long to call her about it.

"It takes something out of your heart to watch that, to have that done to your child," Metts added.

The district confirmed there was an altercation, but spokesperson Shelly Hickman said she cannot share names or discuss disciplinary details.

Hickman also said there is video of the altercation, but federal student privacy laws prevent the district from sharing it.

Hickman said in a statement, "The students were asked if they would like medical attention, though they showed no visible signs of needing it, and both rejected the need to see the school nurse."

"They gave me an ice pack for my lip, and my lip it was like swollen a little bit, but it wasn't broken, my nose was," Holt explained.

The district said the students' guardians were informed after all the interviews were complete, about 45 minutes to an hour later.

Metts said she should have been called immediately and has now unenrolled Holt from Norman High School. She hopes to transfer Holt to another school soon.

Metts also wants to press charges against the girl who hit Holt.

The district said it is fully cooperating with the Norman Police Department.
