The Oklahoma state constitution says gay marriage is illegal. But that wasn't stopping same-sex couples, and those who support them, from fighting to change those laws.

All Souls Church in Tulsa was packed Wednesday night for an engagement party celebrating same-sex couples. Not just one couple, but more than 25 of them.

"We're getting really close and we're really excited," said Chuck Pierce of Tulsa.

He and his partner, Gary Meadows, began their relationship 14 years ago. Wednesday night they were one of many couples celebrating their engagements.

"It's a huge challenge for us to not have the same opportunities as other folks," Pierce said. "So to be that close makes us feel like we're finally getting there."

There were photo booths on hand for all the couples to document the night.

"We have an event tonight with many church going folks and people from all different denominations," said Reverend Marlin Lavanhar of All Souls Unitarian Church.

Pastor Deron Spoo of First Baptist Church in Tulsa wasn't at the event, but said even though he disagrees with same-sex marriage, he doesn't believe people need to hate.

"As much as I disagree with same-sex marriage," Spoo said. "I think in our culture, we could manage our civility a bit, and just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I need to hate you."

At the celebration Wednesday, hatred was the furthest thing from anyone's mind.

"When we saw the parking lot packed we were shocked. It was awesome," Pierce said.

Recently a federal judge ruled that Oklahoma's ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional, but is currently being appealed.
