Golden Eagles Fall In Season Opener

Posted: Updated:

A perfect day at the plate by Emmanuel Forcier in his Golden Eagle debut wasn't enough as the Oral Roberts University baseball team fell in the season opener 10-4 against Southeast Missouri State at home on Friday.

ORU (0-1) has dropped three consecutive season openers for the first time since the 1975-77 seasons, while SEMO improved to 1-0.

Forcier's three hits led the Golden Eagles, while Brandy, Trevino and Sequeira added two each. Brandy and Sequeira were credited with a pair of runs batted in.

Earning the loss on the mound for the Golden Eagles was Kurt Giller (0-1). The senior threw five innings and allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on seven hits. Pepe Gomez pitched an inning, Denny Clement went two and Brad Fisher got the final three outs for the Golden Eagles.

Tellor and Lennington each finished with three hits. Lennington, Mitchell and Evans each drove in a pair of runners, while Tellor, Mitchell and Hewitt crossed the plate twice. Tyler Iago (0-1) was credit with the victory in his Division I debut with Redhawks as he allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out four.

SEMO put four on the board in the top of the first inning, all with two outs, to put the Golden Eagles in an early hole. Andy Lennington started the scoring as he pulled a double into the left field corner to score Cole Bieser. After Dalton Hewitt drew a walk to load the bases, Scott Mitchell singled to right to plate Matt Tellor and Lennington.

Hewitt added the fourth run of the inning as he scored on a passed pall, just before the Golden Eagle starter Giller struck out Andy Lack looking to end the inning.

In the top of the first, Matt Brandy, Jose Trevino and Anthony Sequeira singled in consecutive order, with Brandy crossing the plate on Sequeira's single to cut the early lead to 4-1.

Following a scoreless second inning, the Redhawks added their fifth run of the afternoon in the top of the third. Lennington struck again with a double to score Tellor.

Brandy earned his second hit of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth with a double in the gap to right center to drive in Forcier and the Golden Eagles cut the lead to 5-2.

Again, the Redhawks answered with a pair in the top of the sixth. With Hewitt and Mitchell standing on base, Lack singled to right to score Hewitt. Several batters later, with two outs and the bases loaded, Tellor drew a walk from Gomez to push in Mitchell and the make the score 7-2.

The bottom of the seventh turned out be a very unconventional inning as the Golden Eagles scored two runs on just one hit and no errors. Forcier drew a walk to start the inning and would eventually score as the next three batters, Austen Colt, Logan Domenico and Brandy, were all hit by Redhawk reliever Alex Winkleman.

Still with the bases loaded and one-out, Sequeira drove in his second run of the afternoon with a single to score Colt, cutting the SEMO lead to 7-4. However, the Golden Eagles eventually ended the inning with three runners stranded.

The Redhawks went on to add a run in the top of the eighth off a Bieser double that hopped over third base to drive in Clayton Evans. In the ninth, Evans tacked on the final two runs with a single to right to plate Mitchell and Blum.

The same two teams will battle on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at J.L. Johnson Stadium, with the final game of the three-game set scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
