Sooners Rally For Win Over Northwestern

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. No. 13 Oklahoma rallied from a 9-3 deficit in the sixth inning and emerged with an 11-9 win over Northwestern on Friday at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

Oklahoma led 3-0 after three innings, but Northwestern scored seven runs in the fourth inning and then two more in the fifth inning to take a 9-3 lead.

The Sooners rallied for six runs in the top of the sixth, however, to tie the game at 9-9. The game-tying hit was a two-run single by sophomore Leslie Miller.

In the seventh, with runners on second and third, senior Destinee Martinez chopped a ball to shortstop and junior Shelby Pendley used a terrific head-first slide to score the go-ahead run. A sacrifice fly from sophomore Whitney Ellis added the 11th and final run.

Northwestern had the tying run at the plate with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but junior Jessica Vest caught a line drive at shortstop and threw back to first base to get the game-ending double play.

Seven different OU players drove in a run, led by a career-high three RBI from Martinez.
