OSU Slugger Named Big 12 Player Of The Week

Shortstop Donnie Walton hit .500 and drove in 11 runs in six games for the Cowboys. Walton was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday.

Oklahoma State shortstop Donnie Walton has been named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week for games played Feb. 17-23, it was announced by the league office today.

Walton helped 18th-ranked OSU to a 5-1 week that included series wins over Alcorn State and Oakland. The sophomore from Tulsa hit .500 (12-for-24) with five doubles, a home run and 11 RBIs. He tallied 20 total bases and an .833 slugging percentage and also added four walks and a stolen base. Defensively, he recorded 16 assists and did not commit an error.

In the series with Oakland, Walton was 8-for-16 at the plate with three doubles, a homer and seven RBIs. In a Saturday doubleheader, he went 6-for-10 with a homer, three doubles and five RBIs. That included a career-high four hits in the opener and tying a career best with three RBIs in the nightcap.

Walton hit safely in all six games last week, extending his career-long hitting streak to eight games. In doing so, he raised his batting average to a team-high .429.

The Cowboys face Gonzaga at 5 p.m. on Thursday in the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz.
