89-Year-Old Tulsa Woman Recovering After Being Hit By Car

An 89-year-old woman was hit by a car while taking her afternoon walk earlier in February. Senorina Villalobos is still in the hospital, but her family said she's doing much better and she's anxious to come home.

They said Villalobos tells them, she needs her exercise, so each day about 1 p.m., she gets her walker and heads down the block on the sidewalk and then comes back. But, on one day, a man backing out of his drive-way didn't see her.

Villalobos is almost always surrounded by her big, loving family. She has seven children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They say she loves to tell stories, even stories they have heard many times before and know by heart.

Jesus Trevino, Villalobos's grandson, said, "If she gets you, you can't get away for an hour. She talks about her husband, how he came for her and practically stole her from her mother and how they loved each other so much. She loves to tell stories."

She was married more than 50 years and since his death, she has remained independent, living in her own home, staying as active as she can manage.

Luckily, one of the grandchildren was there when she got hit by her neighbor as he was backing out of his driveway. He told police he just didn't see her.

"The good news is, he knocked on the door and said, ‘Hey, I ran over your grandma,'" Trevino said.

The accident did some damage to Villalobos, with a big goose egg on her head and bruises everywhere. She needs a lot of help with a broken elbow and a leg broken above the knee.

"I've been there when they pick her up off the bed and sit her down to get her used to it and her screaming," Trevino said.

Still, he says her spirits are good and she's ready to get out of the hospital. Doctors say she may need to go to a home for some rehab and therapy first, but, then hopefully, she can go home after that; but Villalobos has a different plan in mind.

"The first day she said, ‘Come pick me up, the nurse won't let me go, but, get me and we can escape out of here.' I said, just give me a minute grandma, lay down, lay down," Trevino laughed.

Police say the driver of the car has fully cooperated. Any ticket or arrest could depend on how Villalobos's recovery goes. There is a law that says any time you drive across a sidewalk, you have to look, and if there's a pedestrian, they have the right of way.
