With another round of winter kicking off the month of March, it has many wondering how much longer this winter will last. Our very own weather expert, Travis Meyer, told us what we can expect.

Meyer said March is a radical month for weather, and while it can bring snow storms and freezing temps, it can also give us sunny and 75. And there are models out telling us which we should prepare for.

It's not what warm weather lovers want to hear. But then again, maybe last year's late snow storm should be taken with a grain of salt.

"Do you know the last time we had the latest snowfall, ever," Meyer asked. "Last year, May 2nd, so it's happened quite recently that we've had some weird weather around here."

Meyer said when March ends, typically so does snow season. Seldom, he said, will flurries fall in April, and even rarer is winter in May.

But March is the month Meyer said has brought the five heaviest snow storms, ever recorded in the United States.

"March, far and away, is the month we're always watching for more heavy snow than we are anything else," Meyer said.

Oklahoma saw nearly 20 inches of snow back in March of 1924. More recently, in 2009, a little more than 10 inches fell, almost all on the same day.

The coldest March on record was in 1960, averaging just below 39 degrees. The warmest, just a few years ago in 2012, at about 61; the average temperature is 51.

But records show the mercury can drop into the teens and below zero, it has many times. Meyer said the most recent data show temperature this March will be at, or below normal, with near normal precipitation; that's about three inches.

So it's still too soon to pack up your sweaters and coats.

"Unfortunately there's still a couple cold shots that will be coming down, especially the first two to three weeks of March. By the end of March, it's much harder to get this type of cold weather in here, so I think we're about to the last one or two significant cold waves of the season," Meyer said.

While snow is common, ice and sleet, which we're expecting Sunday, is pretty rare for the month of March. So, it's looking like the month is coming in like a lion, let's all just hope it goes out like a lamb.
