Oklahoma City voters are to head to the polls in the city's mayor's race. Incumbent Mayor Mick Cornett and City Councilman Dr. Ed Shadid head a four-man field in the non-partisan election.

Between them, Cornett and Shadid have raised more than $1 million to pursue a job that pays $24,000 a year. Cornett has a 2-1 edge in fundraising over Shadid, who is a spinal surgeon and a member of the City Council.

Also on the ballot are Phil Hughes and Joe Sarge Nelson.

If one of the four candidates receives more than 50 percent of the vote he will be elected, otherwise there will be another vote on April 1 with the top two vote-getters on the ballot.

The polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Mayor Cornett says he's seeking re-election, in part, because he loves the job, but also because he believes the city is doing well and he wants to see through to completion some of the projects he's started. Councilman Shadid is running because he believes the city needs a leader who will be an advocate for all residents of the city, and not just for the people and businesses who inhabit the city's downtown core.

Several other elections will also be held.  Council seats will be decided in Yukon, Chickasha and Midwest City. A school bond measure will be decided by Deer Creek voters.
