A new center to help domestic abuse victims in the Tulsa area is in the works this evening. DVIS broke ground Thursday on a new center that will be home to a much bigger emergency shelter, apartments and counseling offices.

People who were at the ceremony signed what leaders are calling a "Beam of Hope" that will be used in construction.

The new shelter will offer some new features, like being able to provide a safe place for families with teenaged boys and a kennel for families who bring their pets with them when they are leaving dangerous situations.

The center should be finished in about ten months.
