A key defensive sequence backed up an early-game home run as the Oral Roberts University baseball team slipped by the Incarnate Word Cardinals by a tally of 2-0 on Wednesday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

Despite being a contest between two Southland Conference member schools, Wednesday's game was played as a non-conference contest. The victory moved ORU's record to 9-10 on the season, while the Cardinals dropped to 6-15.

Jose Trevino had two of the Golden Eagles' five hits in the game, including a solo home run to left in the second inning, his fourth blast of the season. Logan Domenico followed with a double and scored on an Audie Afenir single up the middle for the 2-0 win.

Anthony Sequeira added a double in the bottom of the seventh and Tyler Boss picked up a single.

Two ORU streaks ended in the contest as Matt Brandy had a 19-game hitting streak come to an end, as did a 17-game on-base streak by Emmanuel Forcier. However, Brandy did reach on an error in the eighth inning to extend his on-base streak to 20 contests.

Pepe Gomez (1-2) had a career evening on the mound as he made his longest appearance as a Golden Eagle with seven innings of work and a career high six strikeouts in the start. Jordan Romano entered the game in the eighth and recorded a five-out save, his fourth, with two strikeouts.

Aaron Warren led the Cardinals with two hits, including a double, while Geno Encina (2-4) took with loss in five innings of work.

The Golden Eagles turned a pair of double plays in the game, including one with the bases loaded in the eighth inning. Romano snagged a comebacker to the mound, tossing it to Afenir at home who gunned it to first for the 1-2-3 DP, preserving the lead.

In the ninth, after UIW's Slade Brown extended his on-base streak to 22 games, the Golden Eagles picked off a pinch runner for the first out. Romano then struck out the final two batters to close the game.
