Oklahoma State In Second After Session One At NCAA Championships

After one session of the NCAA wrestling championships in OKC, the Cowboys trail just Penn State in the team standings.

The Oklahoma State wrestling team sits in second place with 13.5 points, advancing eight wrestlers to the second round of the championship bracket. The Pokes trail Penn State (16.5 points) in the team race for first.

The Cowboys picked up four bonus-point wins in the first session, including a second-period fall for Tyler Caldwell.

First up for the Pokes, Blake Rosholt wrestled Mario Gonzalez of Illinois in the 197-pound pigtail match, where he was outlasted by Gonzalez, falling 10-3. Rosholt will wrestle in the consolation bracket in session two.

Sophomore and 14th-seed Eddie Klimara earned a 6-4 decision over Dominic Parisi of Appalachian State at 125 pounds.

No. 4 seed at 133 pounds Jon Morrison started off his final NCAA tournament with a 4-0 shutout over Penn State's James Gulibon. It was Morrison's third win over the Nittany Lion this season.

True freshman Anthony Collica made his NCAA Championships debut as the No. 15 seed, defeating Utah Valley's Avery Gardner, 10-6.

Returning to the tournament after taking a redshirt last season, Josh Kindig, the 11th seed at 149 pounds, handled Ohio State's Ian Paddock, earning a 9-4 decision.

Alex Dieringer ended his bout in five minutes with an 18-1 technical fall over Drexel's Austin Sommer, earning the Pokes' first bonus-point victory of the day.

Caldwell and Chris Perry followed with bonus-point wins at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, with Caldwell sticking Utah Valley's Curtis Cook in 3:36 and Perry earning an 8-0 major decision over Scott Liegel of Wisconsin.

Nolan Boyd suffered the Cowboys' second loss of the day, falling to 7th-seed Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota. He will continue in the consolation bracket.

Heavyweight Austin Marsden capped off the session with more bonus points for the Pokes, snatching a 10-2 major decision over Nebraska's Collin Jensen.

The second session begins at 6 p.m. CT at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
