He's known as the toughest Sheriff in America, but Sheriff Joe Arpio of Maricopa County is also proving to be a softy. See what you think.

I interviewed Sheriff Joe in Phoenix back in 2005, interesting guy.

He's no non-sense. He treats criminals, well, like criminals, and he doesn't want them to like his jail, which is more like a prison really.

Many of them sleep in desert tents. He's made them wear pink underwear. We watched as one of his female chain gangs weeded a cemetery in the Arizona heat.

But tough Sheriff Joe has a soft spot for military veterans who end up in his jail. He's a vet himself and said he feels a bond with those guys.

Arpaio said they fought for our country; the least we can do is help them overcome some of the problems they might have brought back from the battlefield.

He's set up a special unit to separate veteran inmates from the rest of the jail population and to give them special treatment for psychological issues, PTSD, even job training.

But they broke the law. They're still criminals right?

I agree with Sheriff Joe. They served our country. They deserve special consideration.
