TULSA, Oklahoma -

Tulsa County courthouse shooter Andrew Dennehy was sentenced in Tulsa County Court Monday. He received a sentence of 23 years and 10 days.

Dennehy opened fire outside the courthouse on March 7, 2012, wounding Tulsa County Sheriff's Deputy David Adam Fortenberry in the hands.

A jury found him guilty in January of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm, reckless conduct with fire arm, attempted escape and assault and battery on an officer.

Dennehy's attorneys said the man was mentally ill and was trying to die rather than kill anyone else. He wanted police officers to kill him rather than commit suicide so he could go to heaven.

Prosecuting attorney Anthony Evans said he recommended the jury sentence Dennehy to life in prison for wounding a law enforcement officer.

"Frankly, if Deputy Fortenberry's hands hadn't been where they were, he very likely would have died," Evans said following the trial.

"A .357 round to the neck would have very likely killed him."
