Richard Bachman recorded his second shutout of the year as the Oklahoma City Barons skated past the Charlotte Checkers 1-0 Saturday night at the Cox Convention Center.
Bachman stopped all 31 shots he faced en route to his first shutout since Dec. 20, 2013 and improved his season record to 23-17-6-2.
The lone goal of the game came early in second period, thanks in part to a hooking penalty assessed to Charlotte's Jared Staal at 2:42 of the frame. On the power play, C.J. Stretch received an Andrew Miller pass near the left circle and skated through the slot before backhanding the puck through the legs of Checkers goalie John Muse for a 1-0 Oklahoma City lead at 3:42.
On the Stretch goal, Oklahoma City defenseman Brad Hunt recorded his team-leading 37th assist on the season.
Despite being outshot 14-8 in the third period, the Barons held the one-goal lead and picked up two crucial points in the standings, tying Charlotte for ninth place in the Western Conference with 75 points. At press time, Oklahoma City is in a three-way tie with Charlotte and Rockford for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, though the outcome of Rockford's game at Abbottsford could alter the scenario.
With the win, the Barons improved to 32-27-2-9 on the season, while Charlotte dropped to 36-32-1-2.
