Homers Lead Sooners Past Longhorns

NORMAN, Okla. – In a series featuring first-place Oklahoma and second-place Texas, the Sooners (33-9, 10-1) maintained their hold on the top spot in the race for the conference title Thursday night with a 4-1 victory over the Longhorns (26-17, 6-2).

Sophomore Kelsey Stevens struck out seven and allowed just one run, a solo HR in the third, on three hits with no walks to improve to 24-6. She has won her past nine starts.

Senior Brittany Williams and junior Georgia Casey each drove in two runs to account for the Sooners' offense.

Williams had an RBI single in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1 and added a solo home run in the fifth.

Casey hit the go-ahead homer in the fifth, a two-run shot, to put the Sooners up 3-1. She was 2-for-3 in the game with two runs scored.

Freeman Leads Cowgirls Past No. 14 Baylor

STILLWATER, Okla. – On the arm of Simone Freeman, the Oklahoma State softball team opened the three-game series against 14th-ranked Baylor with a decisive 2-1 victory Thursday night at Cowgirl Stadium.

The Cowgirls (24-18, 4-7 Big 12) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Leadoff hitter Shelby Davis was hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout by Ari Morrison. Danielle Riddle grounded out to the shortstop, allowing Davis to score easily to put OSU up 1-0.

OSU extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when leadoff batter Tarah Ettinger hit a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall for her sixth home run of the season.

Baylor (30-10, 4-4) made things interesting in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Holly Holl scored on a wild pitch by Freeman despite striking out Christy Lisenby on the play. With the bases loaded two batters later, Freeman struck out Ari Hawkins and the following batter, Clare Hosack, flied out to centerfield, securing the 2-1 Cowgirl victory.

Freeman (19-10) scattered four hits and struck out six in picking up her 18th complete game of the season. Her counterpart, Whitney Canion (17-8), went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six.

The Cowgirls return to action Friday night for game two of the three-game series against Baylor. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
