OKC Grandmother Helpless To Free Grandson From Burning Home

Neighbors say there was nothing an Oklahoma City grandmother could do to save the life of her 6-year-old grandson early Tuesday.

Tyler Spears was killed in a house fire after an explosion rocked his grandmother's home in the 1300 block of S.W. 23rd Street. Oklahoma Natural Gas and Oklahoma City Fire Department investigators were still trying to determine an official cause of the explosion as of late Tuesday.

"[The grandmother] was trying to go back in there," neighbor LaDonna Wooldridge said. "All she could say was, ‘Oh my God … get my baby out, get my baby out.'"

As of late Tuesday, Wooldridge and her husband were caring for the family's dogs who were in the backyard at the time of the fire. The grandmother was sent to St. Anthony's Hospital for smoke inhalation after the fire.

"I'm really wanting to get [to the hospital] and see her, give her some solace," said David Cole, Tyler's great uncle.

Cole says Tyler was a happy kid who loved playing with his grandmother's dogs. Tyler was a kindergarten student at Columbus Elementary School. Oklahoma City Public Schools tells News 9 counselors will be available for students and staff. Although no official cause of the fire has been released, family members believe they know what happened.

"Heater blew up or something as far as I know," said Cole. "That's all we've been able to piece together."

Neighbors tell News 9 the family did not have homeowner's insurance. Relatives are working to establish a fund for donations. The grandmother is expected to recover from her injuries.
