Fire gutted a vacant north Tulsa church building Thursday evening.

Firefighters got the call just after 9:30 p.m. to the church at the corner of Utica and Oklahoma.

Tulsa Fire Captain Jeremy Moore said the fire appeared to have started in the middle of the building then spread to the attic area. Firefighters were able to knock down the fire quickly. They didn't put it all the way out because they suspected it had been deliberately set and didn't want to destroy evidence.

While they were preserving the scene for an investigator the fire flared back up.

Captain Moore said transients are known to come in and out of the building on a regular basis.

No injuries were reported.

The investigation into Thursday's fire continues.
