American Legion Post 1 in Tulsa is getting a makeover thanks to a group called Soldier's Wish. It has been a landmark in Tulsa since 1919 and it is the oldest continuing operating post in the country.

It's been less than a day and the American Legion already looked a lot different. Companies across the city have donated materials, sweat and money to give Post 1 a face lift.

After more than a century standing, the old building has her share of battle scars. That's why Soldier's Wish stepped in with hammers, drills and paintbrushes for the mission.

Kristal Mitchell, with Soldier's Wish, said, "We came because we said this post really needs something to maybe get younger veterans involved, and that's what our hope is, that they will come and see this place and say that is something we want to be involved in."

Corporate sponsors like Lowe's, Chic-fil-A and Red Dog Construction are donating materials and digging in to uncover and expose what makes the legion post legendary.

"Where we are at right now is that we are finding stuff behind the walls that is really cool.

For me, as a construction nerd, this is about as cool as it gets with near a 100 year old building," Josh McFarland with Soldier's Wish said.

Outside, landscaping gives the place new curb appeal.

"Inside we are basically taking down paneling, and that's really been cool because we saw it had those military emblems in this wood, that was just beautiful," Mitchell said.

A hand painted mural from Pinot's Palette adds a gorgeous touch, but beauty comes at cost.

"We felt it important to take at least three days. This is a 36 hour project and we are 17 hours straight. We are all a little tired but the guys are still hanging in there," McFarland said.

It is not too late to lend a hand; all you need is some sturdy shoes to help a Soldiers Wish come true; they say they are in need of people who can help drywall.

If the weather holds up the project will wrap up Sunday.
