Travis Ford's Oklahoma State basketball program received some disappointing news on Friday.

It was announced that highly-regarded incoming guard Jared Terrell was granted a complete release from OSU.

The Brewster Academy (N.H.) product signed his letter of intent with the Cowboy basketball team during the fall signing period in September but asked to be released because of family issues.

"I think it's better that Jared stay close to home, due to the recent passing of his grandmother, along with other family issues we've been dealing with," Terrell's mother, Michelle Ross, said in a press release. "It's been hard on our family, and this is a tough decision to make. Jared was looking forward to attending Oklahoma State, but this is what's best for our family at this time."

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound shooting guard was OSU's top incoming recruit in a highly-touted 2014 class. Terrell is ranked as the No. 65 overall player in the country by 247Sports and No. 66 by Rivals.

Before initially signing with the Cowboys, Terrell also had scholarship offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, UConn, Kansas, Oklahoma, Providence, St. John's and Xavier, among others.

Terrell led Brewster Academy to the National Prep Championship in early March and was named the MVP of the tournament.

Terrell is now free to talk to any interested programs.

"We are disappointed that Jared won't be a part of the Cowboy Basketball family," Ford said. "He's had a lot of unfortunate circumstances occur in his life recently, and I understand that his family and their well-being takes precedence. We wish him nothing but the best, and hope that everything works out for him."
