We Paid For It: Stimulant Drugs

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of Oklahomans rely on stimulant drugs. They're used to treat things like fatigue, obesity and Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD. Whether we have a family member on them or not, we're all paying for them.

Oklahoma Medicaid patients filed 305,091 claims for stimulant drugs last year, costing us $50,069,077 of our tax dollars.

The most expensive claims were for medications used to treat ADHD: Concerta, Adderall XR and Intuniv. Those three drugs account for more than $27.5 million tax dollars.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 9.9% of children in Oklahoma between 4 and 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD, higher than the national average of 8.8%.
