Cowboys Blanked In Series Opener

AUSTIN, Texas – Oklahoma State managed just two hits Friday night as the No. 9 Cowboys dropped a 3-0 decision to 10th-ranked Texas in the series opener at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

In being shut out for only the second time this season, the Cowboys dropped to 29-13 overall. OSU, which entered the contest having won seven-straight Big 12 Conference games, is still in first place in the Big 12 Conference standings at 11-5, holding a ½ game lead over TCU.

Parker French worked the first six innings for Texas to improve to 5-3, while Chad Hollingsworth tossed the final three frames for his first save. Each pitcher allowed just one hit, both of them singles.

Jon Perrin suffered the loss for the Cowboys despite allowing just one run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings. The right-hander, who had won his last three starts, issued a career-high six walks and fell to 5-3.

The Longhorns (32-11, 10-6) plated their first run in the fourth inning when C.J. Hinojosa, who opened the frame with a single, came around to score on an RBI fielder's choice by Jacob Felts when OSU was unable to turn a double play.

UT added key insurance runs in the eighth against Cowboy reliever Vince Wheeland, getting RBI singles from Zane Gurwitz, who had three of the Longhorns' seven hits in the game, and Felts.

OSU's lone hits came in the third inning on a two-out single by Craig McConaughy and in the ninth when Donnie Walton led off the frame with an opposite-field single.

The two teams return to action Saturday at 1 p.m.

Texas Tech Claims Series Opener Over Sooners

LUBBOCK, Texas – The University of Oklahoma baseball team opened its road series at No. 21 Texas Tech with a 9-5 loss at Rip Griffin Park on Friday night. The Sooners dropped to 25-18 overall and 5-8 in the Big 12, while the Red Raiders improved to 33-13 and 9-7.

Oklahoma scored twice in the first inning and had all five of its runs scored through four innings, but failed to keep Texas Tech off the board in each of the first five innings.

Despite claiming a two-run lead in the first, the Sooners would surrender four in the bottom half and trail the rest of the way, narrowing the gap to one by the middle of the fourth.

In the first, sophomore center fielder Craig Aikin drew a four-pitch lead-off walk and scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Redshirt-junior right fielder Taylor Alspaugh followed Aikin with a single up the middle and scored on a RBI groundout by junior third baseman Mac James.

The Red Raiders started quickly in the home half of the first; loading the bases with nobody out on two walks and a base hit. First baseman Eric Gutierrez cleared the bases with a single to right field and advanced to third on an error. He scored on a RBI groundout from third baseman Jake Barrios.

Left fielder Tyler Neslony added to the Texas Tech lead with a solo home run into the Red Raider bullpen beyond the right field wall.

Redshirt-sophomore lefty Adam Choplick was chased after allowing a lead-off walk in the fourth inning. In three-plus innings of work, Choplick (3-5) gave up seven runs, all earned, on seven hits and three walks, despite striking out five.

For Texas Tech, right-hander Ryan Moseley lasted just one inning in his second start of the season. He was tagged for two runs on two hits and a walk. Left-hander Jonny Drozd (5-0) pitched five innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed nine hits, but just three runs as he didn't allow a walk and struck out four.

Right-hander Corey Taylor pitched a three-inning-save to lock down the win. He allowed just one hit and struck out one.

The Sooners were outhit by the Red Raiders, 13-12. Four different players recorded a two-hit game. Junior second baseman Keach Ballard, sophomore catcher Anthony Hermelyn and freshman first baseman Austin O'Brien all went 2-for-4, while Alspaugh was 2-for-5.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore left-hander Jacob Evans will pitch for Oklahoma.

ORU Falls At Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Oral Roberts University baseball team was unable to come back from a big Texas A&M-Corpus Christi inning on Friday evening as the Golden Eagles dropped game one of their Southland Conference series 7-2 to the Islanders.

The loss moved ORU to 9-10 in the conference and 22-19 overall, while the Islanders (24-19, 13-6) stay in a first place tie with Nicholls after Friday's league action.

Brandon Healy had a pair of singles in the game, as well as the lone run batted in for the Golden Eagles, and Matt Brandy picked up a couple of singles and scored once. Taking the loss for the Golden Eagles was Guillermo Trujillo (2-3) as he went 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits.

The Islanders' middle of the lineup had a big game with Tyler Ware leading the way with three hits, while Cody Stephens, Russell Vaughan and Kyle Danford each reached safely twice.

Matt Danton (6-2) went all nine innings in the start for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out five.

With runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings, the Islanders held on to a 6-0 over the Golden Eagles. In the bottom of the first, Frankie Salas singled through the left side to plate Jordan Lee, and Danford singled in the fourth to drive in Stephens.

In the home half of the fifth, Stephens singled to right field with one out to bring home Brandon Tierney and Ware to go up 4-0. The inning continued as Vaughan singled in Stephens and Vaughan later scored on a balk to extend the lead to 6-0.

The Golden Eagles got on the board with a couple of runs in the top of the seventh. Brandy, Joey Migliaccio and Anthony Sequeira earned three straight singles to start the inning. Brandy got the Golden Eagles on the board, scoring as the Golden Eagles grounded into a double play.

Migliaccio moved to third on the double play and scored on a single through the left side by Healy to make it a 6-2 game.

The Islanders added the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth on a Ware RBI bloop single to right to score Josh Garza to go up 7-2.

Tyler Boss and Brandon Tierney each had hitting streaks come to an end on Friday. Boss entered the game with a 12 game hitting streak, while Tierney had hit safely in 13 straight.

ORU looks to even the series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with game two set to begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday evening.
