What's Up With The Strange Winds In Northeast Oklahoma?

It's Oklahoma, so it's supposed to be windy. But doesn't it seem as though the wind has been really strange this week, even by Oklahoma standards?

The reason for the strange winds this week is a powerful upper-level system that's located hundreds of miles northeast of Tulsa. It's the same system that brought severe weather to Oklahoma, Arkansas and other states in the region this week.

It's created a northwest flow aloft, which translates to gusty winds out of the northwest for northeastern Oklahoma.

As strong as they are, News On 6 Meteorologist Mike Grogan says the wind speeds are just below the threshold for a wind advisory to be issued.

He says the winds will die down in the evening and pick back up again each morning until Thursday afternoon.

The unusual weather pattern has also brought unseasonably cool temperatures to the Tulsa area.

News On 6 Meteorologist Alan Crone writes in his blog that normal temperatures should return to northeast Oklahoma just in time for the weekend.

"Thursday into Friday should feature temperatures below the seasonal average with lows in the upper 30s and lower 40s and highs in the 60s. Friday may support a high near 70 to 75, but warmer air will be likely this weekend. Saturday's highs should reach the upper 70s to near 80 with Sunday possibly in the mid-80s," he wrote.
