OKLAHOMA CITY -

Letter carriers were out on their normal routes Saturday, but they picked up more than the mail. They accepted donations of food for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

Dozens of volunteers from Devon Energy had the job of sorting through pounds upon pounds of non-perishable food items. The donations will go directly to families in need.

One in every six Oklahoman struggles with hunger according to the Region Food Bank of Oklahoma and a quarter of kids in the state go to bed hungry each night.

"About 675,000 Oklahomans are at risk of hunger every day in our state, which is an astounding number," explained Dawn Burroughs, with the food bank.

"Hunger is kind of a silent issue. People don't like to talk about it a lot. You don't see people that say I'm hungry or I've gone without food or I don't have enough food for my family. They're kind of embarrassed by that and so to be able to raise that level of awareness so people know about it, is critical."

The event was part of a nationwide campaign to fight hunger. The Midwest City post office usually brings in the biggest haul of food in the metro. After just four hours of sorting, volunteers already had an entire truck packed with food.
