Your 2 Cents: 3rd Grade Reading Sufficiency Test

After talking to public school reading experts, I've come to believe this one-size-fits-all "pass or flunk" reading test for 3rd graders is a bad idea. Here's what you had to say.

After talking to public school reading experts, I've come to believe this one-size-fits-all "pass or flunk" reading test for 3rd graders is a bad idea. Here's what you had to say.

Kori from Wetumka first: "See, Kelly Ogle gets it. My 3rd grade daughter stressed all year about the stupid reading test instead of enjoying learning new things."

Kara writes: "It's a horrible attempt to "fix" a system that would be better fixed by allowing teachers to just TEACH."

From Robert in Norman: "…when my daughter took the test last year she was so stressed out before and during the test that she completely shut down at home and wouldn't hardly eat or sleep."

Chad in Mustang: "My 2nd grade daughter reads everything, but when I time her, she stutters and gets frustrated. She would fail the test if she were to take it now."

Debra in Okemah writes: "One size does not fit all! Test the kids at the first of the year and again towards the end to see how they are doing."

Finally, Judyth says: "I have a grandchild who was one of the ones in first grade who struggled. [It ] took many years of working with him and several really dedicated teachers who loved him and worked hard with him, but in fourth grade he "got it". If he had taken the reading pass or fail test in third grade, he would have been one left behind."

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's YOUR 2 Cents.
