TULSA, Oklahoma -

A fire in an upstairs apartment at an east Tulsa complex destroyed one apartment and damaged several others early Thursday.

The Tulsa Fire Department got the alarm at 3:30 a.m. to the Sugarberry Apartments in the 10900 block of East 61st Street.

Firefighters said they were able to contain the fire quickly but 16 families had to be evacuated while they fought the fire.

One man who lives in the apartment where the fire started said he hasn't been there since Tuesday, so he doesn't know what caused it.

Firefighters went door-to-door to evacuate people. Smoke detectors woke up others.

"Jumped up and went to the kitchen and there was smoke coming through the walls. Went to my closet and there was smoke in there also, and so I got dressed and ran downstairs," said resident Jamy Brown. "I came around and I saw the flames coming out of this part of the building and saw the fire truck."

No one was hurt.

Fire officials said the fire started inside an upstairs apartment and spread to the attic.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The Red Cross is assisting families impacted by the fire.
