Red River Rivalry Staying Put Through 2025

DALLAS -

The Red River Rivalry isn't going anywhere any time soon.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings formally announced an extension on Tuesday that will keep the annual OU-Texas game at the State Fair of Texas through 2025, adding five years on to a deal that already ran through 2020.

According to reports, both OU and Texas receive payments of $500,000 for playing at the Cotton Bowl, along with a 50-50 split of ticket sales. Dallas area officials estimate the rivalry game annually provides an economic boost of more than $20 million in the county.

Oklahoma and Texas have played at Fair Park since 1929 with the Longhorns leading the series 46-35-4.

"Generations of Sooners and Longhorns will proudly attest that the Red River Showdown is played amidst the most unique atmosphere in all of college football," OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said. "Two of football's greatest programs and their legions of passionate fans are diametrically situated in the historic Cotton Bowl, surrounded by revelry of the State Fair of Texas.

"The University of Oklahoma is thrilled about preserving the rich tradition of this game in the City of Dallas. While subject to any necessary final approval by the board of regents from universities, we are looking forward more future student-athletes and fans enjoying the spectacle of this renowned football rivalry for many years to come."
