Boys & Girls Club Flooding Affects Hundreds Of Children

Parents across Oklahoma County were left scrambling, looking for child care Monday, after rainwater flooded the Boys & Girls Club of Oklahoma County.

The organization cares for hundreds of children a day during the summer months.

The club believes a construction project at a neighboring park made conditions right for a flood, allowing rainwater to pool around the building. Throughout Monday, volunteers made the first steps in a week-long, unexpected renovation project.

"It's a horrible mess," club CEO Jane Sutter said. "We have computers ruined, furniture ruined."

Most of the 35,000 sq. ft. building was under water. Surveillance video showed the water building outside the facility early Monday. All of the water means some 325 children will need a new place to go. For Ashlee Salter, the Boys & Girls Club is childcare.

"I had [my children] at work with me this morning, but I was planning on bringing them here at 11," said Salter. "Now they whole week? Now I've got to come up with something."

The club's goal is to get things back to normal as soon as possible. That goal has club leaders meeting with Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation officials and insurance agents.

"If the insurance doesn't come through, we're going to need to do some fundraising," Sutter said. "We don't have an extra $50,000 to $75,000 in our budget to pay for the restoration right now."
