CLEVELAND COUNTY, Oklahoma -

A Cleveland County judge has ruled that a man accused of killing and dismembering his mother back in November of 2012 is still considered a danger to the public.

Gerald Hume was in court today for the hearing to determine if he would be released from state care.

He was found not guilty by reason of insanity back in April.

Judge Lori Walkley ruled today that he does need continued supervision and in person treatment and has committed him to the state.

The Hume family is relieved with today's decision, saying Gerald Hume needs to stay locked up where he can be treated for his mental illness.

They came face to face with him in court today.

It has been several months since the family has seen Gerald Hume after he was whisked away in a police car following a long standoff with police.

Inside officers found his 77-year-old mother Janet Hume dead - part of her body was found in the freezer.

The family says the man they see today has put on weight, but obviously still needs constant supervision to keep him on his meds.

"He did murder his mother," said Scott Kuper, who is Gerald Hume's cousin. Janet Hume was his aunt. "He shot her 11 times, and then cut her up into eight pieces, and he was hiding it! He was going to try to hide it."

Kuper says he was close to his Aunt Janet. He is the one who called police to check up on her that terrible November day two years ago.

He says the family knew Gerald was mentally ill, but never thought he would be capable of cold blooded murder.

"He had been locked up several times for shooting out windows," said Kuper. " He lived in one of my aunts rent houses, shooting out windows in cars. He even stole a gun once."

Kuper and Hume's entire family agree with the judge that Hume needs to stay committed in a state mental institution, so he can continue to receive supervision and in person treatment for his schizophrenia.

"If they let him out within two days, he'll quit taking the medicine," said Kuper. "The voices tell him not to take the medicine.

Kuper says his cousin Gerald isn't evil, just mentally ill and never showed any violence towards his mom before.

They still don't know why he did what he did.

The family says Hume refused to make any eye contact with them in the courtroom during today's hearing and appeared to be under heavy sedation.
