A Norman city council member is now the subject of numerous death threats. The threats started after the airing of a documentary about a gay teenager in Norman who took his own life.

"Broken Heart Land" is about a Norman family shattered when their gay teenage son commits suicide. It happened after a city council debate in 2010, over a proposal for Gay and Lesbian History Month.

Chad Williams was not part of the Norman City Council in 2010. He spoke out against the proposal.

"I don't regret that at all because I showed my heart," says Williams.

The documentary also follows the Church administrator's successful run for Norman City Council and details his belief that homosexuality is a "lifestyle" choice.

The film aired on PBS nationwide a week ago. Since the documentary aired, Williams tells News 9, he's received about 20 phone calls and hate messages including 3 death threats.

"When you drive to work you are constantly thinking of your surroundings. You're constantly thinking of where your kids and your wife are," said Williams.

Williams has already contacted police. He said he won't have more than usual security at city council meetings, but did pull his phone number from the city's web site.
