One of Oklahoma's finest, who lost both legs and an arm while serving in Afghanistan, is getting a new home.

Staff Sergeant Rusty Dunagan broke ground Wednesday on a fully customized smart home.

At the official groundbreaking ceremony, those who have already donated and will donate to the building of the house were recognized and thanked. Among the donors for the project: the Gary Sinise Foundation. Sinise himself was in town earlier this year laying the foundation for the project.

“The support that we’ve had from the community has just been overwhelming,” SSG Dunagan said.

The home will have cabinets that lower, a cooktop that does the same, automatic doors and an open layout so SSG Dunagan can easily maneuver.

"It’s just going to make it where I don’t have to worry about bumping into things," said SSG Dunagan. "I can turn around in the wheel chair if I need to."

In addition, automatic lighting, temperature control and a security system with cameras will be controlled by an iPad.

“Access cameras to check what’s going on around his house," explained Project Manager Scott Schaeperkoetter. "A lot of guys use that to check on their kids in the background or backyard.”

“It’s going to give me more independence,” SSG Dunagan said.

The house should take about nine months to build. Weather permitting, an estimated move in date is the end of February.

They do still need donations for the home. Click here for more information or to donate. There is a place where you can specifically donate to SSG Dunagan, if you wish.
