POTEAU, Okla. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a Cameron man to life in prison without parole for the shooting death of his former brother-in-law.
In May, a LeFlore County jury convicted Raymond Larry Nichols of first-degree murder in the 2009 death of Donald Joe Neff. Authorities say Neff was shot once in the back of the head outside of his bar in Poteau. His body was discovered three days later in a strip pit in Pocola.
District Court Judge Jon Sullivan handed down the life sentence Thursday to Nichols.
According to the Southwest Times Record of Fort Smith, Arkansas (http://bit.ly/1ztDPE1 ), Nichols has maintained his innocence throughout court proceedings. His attorney had argued there was no direct evidence linking Nichols to the crime.
