Investigators release new information in the case against an Enid couple charged in their baby's death.

According to police reports, the infant was dead for several hours before anyone noticed. The Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy of 6-week-old Kadence Cannon's body and was unable to determine exactly how she died.

Still, detectives first on the scene indicated the evidence shows a pattern of neglect.

"This never should have happened," said Carole Wade, Director of Garfield County Child Advocacy Council.

Wade learned of the baby's death and the child neglect case against her parents in May. At that time, investigators indicated 46-year-old Mark Cannon and 27-year-old Jennifer Cannon admitted they were drinking all night, put the baby to bed and did not check on her for more than six hours. The couple has been jailed ever since.

"Substance abuse figures into many of our abuse and neglect cases," Wade said the victim's age and the nature of the abuse makes this case unusual.

"It's truly heartbreaking."

Newly-released information provided more background to the allegations against the Cannons. Court records indicate the 6 week old had dirt in almost every crevice of her body, fecal matter in the folds of her legs, a severe case of untreated diaper rash and apparently head lice.

With such warning signs, Wade said more than likely the death could have been prevented.

"I would imagine that people involved with this case look back and a lot of regrets," Wade said, adding that it’s important that the community to report anything that looks like child abuse or neglect.

"You might be saving someone's life or saving a family from a real tragedy."

The Cannons are being held on $600,000 bond, each. They are due back in court in Aug. 16.
