A Tulsa Police officer went above and beyond the call of duty to save a flock of geese and a friend happened to be in the right place at the right time to capture it on camera.

Corporal Brian Collum, 49, was pulling out of the QuikTrip at 81st & Memorial on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 when he saw traffic backed up on Memorial. He thought there was a wreck, so he activated his emergency lights and drove around the backup to see what the problem was.

He was surprised to see a flock of about 30 geese walking along Memorial, oblivious to the danger they were creating. "It was a hazard for the geese and a hazard for traffic," he said.

Collum used his squad car and emergency lights to block traffic, which by then was backing up in both directions, as the geese walked eastbound, sometimes on the sidewalk and sometimes in the road. He had to get out of the car several times to convince the geese to keep moving.

That's when Tim Baselj happened on the scene. Baselj, 46, is a driver for UPS. He's also a close friend of Collum's. He grabbed his phone and snapped a photo so he could share the scene with Collum's wife.

"I sent him a text and told him I had a picture of him," Baselj said. He then sent the photo to Collum's wife. "She loved it and posted it on her Facebook page."

Baselj said it was great to be able to take a photo of his friend doing something like that. "I don't know if it was a random cop if I'd have done it."

Cpl. Collum said there seemed to be geese everywhere, but the photo only captured about half the flock. The geese finally decided to waddle into a neighborhood and get out of traffic.

Collum said he's getting a good ribbing from his colleagues on the force, but he doesn't mind.
