The Oklahoma City RedHawks and Nashville Sounds split a doubleheader Friday in front of a crowd of 8,429 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Nashville (52-48) took a six-run lead in the first game before the RedHawks fought to within one run in an eventual 7-6 loss. The Sounds built an early lead again in the second game, but the RedHawks (51-50) put together a late comeback on their way to a 9-7 win.
Game 1: Nashville 7, RedHawks 6
Nashville built a 7-1 lead in the first game of Friday’s doubleheader before the RedHawks compiled a five-run sixth inning to cut the Sounds’ lead to one run.
The Sounds took the lead in the first inning on a RBI single by Jeremy Hermida. Sean Halton followed with a third straight hit for Nashville, connecting on a line-drive single to right field to put the Sounds in front, 2-0.
In the third inning with the bases loaded, Domingo Santana hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Carlos Perez, who led off the inning with a walk, and cut Nashville’s lead to 2-1.
A bases loaded walk issued by RedHawks starting pitcher Alex White in the fourth inning put the Sounds ahead by two runs once again, 3-1.
Jorge De Leon replaced White with one out and the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Pete Orr then hit the first pitch he saw down the right-field line for a bases-clearing triple to put Nashville in front, 6-1.
A RBI single by Jason Rogers scored the fifth run of the inning for the Sounds and gave them a 7-1 advantage.
The RedHawks connected on five straight hits to start the sixth inning and went on to score five runs in the frame.
Gregorio Petit led off for Oklahoma City with a double, then scored on a RBI single by Jonathan Villar for the RedHawks’ second run of the night. A RBI double on a deep fly ball to center field by Carlos Perez cut the Sounds lead to 7-3. Austin Wates followed with a two-run double to right field to make the score, 7-5, still with none out. A wild pitch by Dustin Molleken brought home the fifth run of the inning for the RedHawks and cut the Nashville lead to 7-6.
The RedHawks loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Ronny Torreyes grounded into a force out to end the game.
White (1-3) was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs on five hits over 3.1 innings. He walked three and struck out three.
Nashville reliever Brent Leach (4-1) recorded the win for the Sounds.
Austin Wates led the RedHawks with three hits and two RBI, as Oklahoma City outhit Nashville, 10-9.
Game 2: RedHawks 9, Nashville 7
In the second game, Nashville once again built an early lead, but the RedHawks scored a combined seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take the lead late in the win.
A two-run homer to right field by Caleb Gindl put the Sounds in front, 2-0, in the first inning.
Nashville added two more runs in the top of the third inning to go ahead, 4-0. Kevin Mattison led off the inning with a double. Pete Orr followed with a bunt single and Mattison scored on a throwing error on the play. A RBI single by Jason Rogers later in the inning scored Orr for a four-run advantage for Nashville.
The first runs of the night for the RedHawks came in the bottom of the third inning when Jonathan Villar hit a two-run double to cut the Nashville lead to 4-2.
Matt Clark singled in the Sounds’ fifth run of the night in the top of the fifth inning to extend Nashville out to a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Villar reached on a force attempt, and a fielding error by second baseman Orr. Two runs scored on the play to cut the score to, 5-4, with one out. The RedHawks then took their first lead of the game, 6-5, on a two-run single by Marc Krauss.
A two-run double by Kevin Mattison on a fly ball to left-center field regained the lead for Nashville, 7-6, in the top of the sixth.
A single to left field by Jio Mier brought home Matt Duffy from second base to tie the game, 7-7, in the bottom of the sixth. Later in the inning, Ronny Torreyes hit a two-run single to put the RedHawks in the lead once again, 9-7.
RedHawks pitcher Kevin Chapman (2-1) pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit in the win.
Nashville pitcher Jose De La Torre (1-1) was charged with the blown save and the loss.
Villar recorded three RBI to pace the RedHawks, while Torreyes had two hits and two RBI.
Nashville outhit the RedHawks, 13-8, in the game.
The RedHawks continue their series against Nashville with a 7:05 p.m. game Saturday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
