Firefighters say a Tulsa man suffered burns on his hands after a mattress he was lying on caught fire early Saturday.
Fire Captain Tony Woods said the man was smoking in bed when his mattress caught fire at about 1:45 a.m. Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the home in the 1300 block of South Atlanta and quickly extinguished the small fire.
They said the victim suffered second-degree burns on both hands as well as minor smoke inhalation. EMSA took the man to the hospital to be checked out.
Woods says since there was not a working smoke detector in the home, firefighters installed one. The only damage reported was the burnt mattress.
