Petitioners wanting marijuana to be legalized in Oklahoma for medical purposes used Tulsa’s Center of the Universe Festival to obtain signatures before the August submission deadline.

The group hopes to get 20,000 signatures this weekend.

"Oklahomans for Health" had three tents up near live music stages in the Brady Arts District. It is the group's grassroots effort to get more than 155,000 signatures from registered voters.

The petitioners say they're very close to getting all the signatures needed, which would allow the medical marijuana question to be put on the general election ballot.

All those signatures collected have to be certified.

“It’s a target-rich environment for us for people to sign the petition,” petitioner Chip Paul said. “So it's exciting for us to be out here.”

Oklahomans for Health will be turning in petitions on August 15.

Oklahoma State Senator Brian Crain (R-Tulsa) says he's opposed and defeated two marijuana measures that came through his committee over the years.

Crain said he supports the petition process and the group's effort to get a question on the November ballot. Lawmakers have already rejected similar proposals, Crain said.

"I don't think we're ready for any type of relaxation of our marijuana laws,” Crain said. “The legislature has been strongly opposed to this both in public and in private, and I think that's a reflection of their constituencies from across the state."
