Tahlequah Police Department is investigating death of an elderly woman on July 24, 2014, as a homicide. Police Chief Nate King says an officer conducting a welfare check in the 1200 block of West Keetoowah found 71-year-old Beverly Marshall dead inside her home.

Detectives found four small wounds on her body, King said. The next day, the state Medical Examiner’s Office said those wounds were made by a small caliber handgun.

Marshall had been shot in the upper torso and head.

Authorities say a person of interest developed during their investigation was found dead Friday night by Cherokee County Sheriff’s deputies. King says that person, who was not identified, is believed to have committed suicide.

Detective Jeff Haney will continue to process the evidence and complete the investigation, King said.
