Tax free weekend started Friday for all Oklahomans.

As the start of the school year nears, parents are definitely taking advantage of the savings for back-to-school needs.

Expect crowds at retailers this weekend, and just make sure you know what is and isn’t tax free.

Any Oklahoma parent will tell you every dollar counts for back-to-school shopping.

“Everybody’s on a budget nowadays,” said OKC mom, Myra McQueen.

McQueen says not having to pay sales tax this weekend truly makes a difference for her and her girls.

“We got up early this morning,” explained McQueen. “I said, ‘Come on, early birds get the worm. We are going to get up early, and we are going to go do this.’”

It's her second go-round at taking advantage of the tax free holiday.

“I could us that extra money,” said McQueen. “We can go out to eat, go downtown, walk around, you know. Just use that money for a little extra something different.”

Oklahoma's tax free weekend applies to clothing and footwear, with the exception of athletic shoes, that are individually priced less than $100.

School supplies are not tax free, but many stores are dropping prices on those items to coincide with the tax free savings.

“Any little bit of savings can help, so that’s where we really see customers taking advantage of the sales tax holiday, so they can save money on their school shopping,” said Erica Jones with Walmart.

McQueen expects to spend at least $350 this weekend for her girls.

The National Retail Federation reports consumers will spend an average of $670 on back-to-school shopping this year.

We asked Myra McQueen if she was going to do more shopping this weekend, and she said, “Yep, I’m going to start all over again tomorrow. I took vacation just for this.”

The tax free weekend doesn't just apply to in-store purchases.You can also cash in on the savings by mail, telephone, email or online.

Tax free weekend ends at midnight on August 3.
