Getting in shape is Mike Womer’s passion and he has shared this with hundreds of clients since he opened the doors at his Bear, Delaware health club, 1614 Fitness, in 2001. Once again this year, Mike is encouraging anyone who wants to run in the Delaware 5K Mud Run to participate in his Journey to Dirty program.

Preparing for a 5K run is never an easy process and running a 5K like the Delaware Mud Run is even more challenging. The approximately three-mile race is run with boot camp style obstacles that have been surrounded by or consist of mud. Runners and teams of contestants slip, slide, and slosh their way to victory in this unique experience. A mudder himself, Mike Womer is trying to help participants get in shape to compete, but more importantly, help with the fund-raising for the Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware. Mike has partnered with Embrace Home Loans and together Mike and Joe Beacher, Vice President, Embrace Home Loans, have designed the Journey to Dirty program.

Starting August 1st and continuing until September 19th, just before the Mud Run event, Journey to Dirty participants can walk, run, bike and train to get in shape. For every mile run and every pound lost, Embrace Home Loans will make a donation to the Mud Run where 100% of all money raised goes to the Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware.

According to the National Cancer Institute, every four minutes one person in the United States is diagnosed with a blood cancer. This includes leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes, all cancers that affect the bone marrow, the blood cells, the lymph nodes and other parts of the lymphatic system. While research has produced enormous progress in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases over the years, resulting in longer life expectancies for those diagnosed, there is still a long way to go. On average 34% of those diagnosed do not survive.

In 2007, Denni and Nick Ferrara, established the Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware (LRFDE) to raise money to further this research. They did so because of their personal experience with leukemia. At age three and a half, their daughter, Natalia, was diagnosed with high risk leukemia. While today, Natalia is one of the 59% who survive leukemia, Denni and Nick can’t forget the inspiring doctors and patients they met during their family’s journey to combat this life threatening disease. Their experience fueled the desire to raise money for better therapies, improved patient care, and ultimately a cure.

The Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware is dependent on events like the Delaware Mud Run which was established in 2008. Those who ran in the first event are affectionately referred to as “mudders” or one of the originals. This tradition has continued and will be held for the sixth consecutive year this September.

This year’s Mud Run is expected to be as fun, exciting and rewarding as the five that have preceded it, and with Mike and Joe’s help, contestants will be in tip top shape for the race.
