Robin Williams' suicide is putting depression in the spotlight. Many people suffer from depression, but there are local resources that help those who are struggling.

It's a topic that is often avoided, and, in some cases, it isolates those dealing with it.

"Then that's the tricky part. What do you do? Where do you go," that’s what Travis Hensley wondered when he decided to look for help.

It's a question those suffering from depression ask themselves when the disease becomes unavoidable, and all too often, the answer seems out of reach.

Learn More About Depression

"Often people don't feel as comfortable talking about depression, getting treatment for depression,” said Medical Director at Laureate Hospital, Dr. Matthew Meyer. “So I certainly hope the awareness and interest and motivation will improve for people to get treatment."

Treatment, that many times, comes along with a stigma.

"You don't want to be the person in the straitjacket drooling on the sofa, but that's not what it is,” Hensley said. “People have to understand that a mental health condition is a physical condition much like it's a condition with your brain. It's no different than diabetes is a condition with your pancreas."

"Depression is actually one of the most common illnesses in this country, and worldwide. It's in many places as prevalent as high blood pressure, diabetes. And so it's one of the biggest healthcare problems that we face," said Meyer.

A healthcare problem that can affect many faces, even the face of a funny man on the big screen; but those who have struggled themselves, say, it doesn't have to destroy your life, or worse, end it.

"But in the end, you think that there's no hope left, but there is, you just have to make it through," said Hensley.
