San Diego, California (PRWEB) August 22, 2014

San Diego State University is offering a Professional Certificate in Grant Writing online program to help individuals and companies compete for funding in an increasingly challenging environment.

The program, which is available through SDSUs College of Extended Studies, focuses on the fact that grant writing is a key component of securing funding for many of San Diegos most dynamic organizations. San Diego alone is home to thousands of nonprofit organizations ranging from large educational institutions and hospitals to small startup agencies seeking funding through various grants.

Jay Katz, who has been writing grant proposals since 1990 and started his own business as full-time grant writer in 1995 is the program instructor.

People who will benefit the most are those who are in the nonprofit field and looking to build on their skills. There are those who may be pursuing a career with a nonprofit organization, and they want to gain skills and make themselves more attractive to potential employers, Katz said.

Students endorse Katz as their instructor and the online experience. Comments include:

"The instructor had a vast knowledge of grant writing as well as other forms of raising money for projects."
                                                                                                 Kimberly M. Paris

"He explains everything very thoroughly and makes it all so easy to understand."
                                                                                                 Jessica Van Der Woude

"This online experience was my first ... and it was a very enjoyable way to learn."
                                                                                                 Tim Konzen

To complete the certificate program, students must finish two courses: Introduction to Grants and Funding Research along with Grant Proposal Development. Introduction to Grants and Funding Research takes place Sept. 2 to Oct. 5; Grant Proposal Development is Oct. 20-Nov. 30.

The Introduction to Grants and Funding Research course focuses on finding grant funding for nonprofit organizations and tax-exempt institutions. The course prepares students for successfully researching funding prospects, interacting with those funders, and planning a grant proposal.

In Grant Proposal Development, the course prepares students to write winning grant proposals for nonprofit organizations or tax-exempt institutions. Students will learn how to develop a compelling, effective grant proposal, including the proposal narrative and budget.

This is a SDSU Research Foundation program managed by SDSUs College of Extended Studies.

SDSU's College of Extended Studies reaches out to the greater San Diego community, the nation, and the world with a wide variety of lifelong learning classes, seminars, and certificate programs.
