Oklahoma Democrats Choose Johnson, Cox To Face Off With Republicans This Fall

Tuesday's run-off election has decided the Democratic nominees for state school superintendent and Tom Coburn's Senate Seat. We're still waiting for results from a closely-watched bond issue in Broken Arrow and the new Tulsa County District Attorney.

On the Democratic side, State Senator Connie Johnson has declared a winner over perennial candidate Jim Rogers. Johnson will take on U.S. Representative James Lankford for the seat of retiring Senator Tom Coburn.

She has campaigned on several social and civil liberties issues, including the legalization of marijuana and reform of Oklahoma's criminal justice system, among others.

As for the State Superintendent race, Jon Cox has been declared the winner of the democratic nomination. Cox will take on Republican Joy Hofmeister who beat out superintendent Janet Barresi in June.

Cox has worked in education for 30 years as a teacher, principal and superintendent. Both Cox and Deskin had said Oklahoma voters made a statement by turning Barresi out of office in the primary.

Tulsa county residents are voting for a new district attorney for the first time in 15 years. The Republican run-off is between current County Assistant DA Stephen Kunzweiler and House Representative Fred Jordan.

Latest Election Results

The winner takes the reins from Tim Harris - who has been the District attorney here in Tulsa since 1998.

Eyes are on Broken Arrow as well. The fourth largest city in Oklahoma has a $36 million bond issue up for vote that would improve a number of roads and city infrastructure.

Sapulpa voters approved a $40.5 million bond issue for improvements to the public school system. It's the largest bond vote in the school district's history.

With 100 percent of precincts voting, 1,584 voters approved the $39.3 million construction bond that includes a new wing for the middle school, refurbished football stadium, a soccer field and 8-lane track, improved security facilities and safe rooms for kids. A total of 686 people voted against the construction bond.
