OU Drops Narrow 1-0 Decision to FSU

NORMAN, Okla. -- A gritty defensive effort was not enough to keep the Oklahoma soccer team unbeaten Sunday afternoon as the Sooners dropped a 1-0 decision to the No. 2 Florida State Seminoles. OU (2-1-1) surrendered its lone goal of the match in the 22nd minute to the defending NCAA runner-up Noles (4-0-0), while five different Sooners took shots throughout the game.

"I thought we were a little disjointed as a group today," head coach Matt Potter said. "That is (part of) a learning process for us. When you play a Florida State team that has been there and done it on every stage possible, you have to put a complete game together. There's the learning for us. I can't be disappointed."

The contest was an aggressive match up, marked by 90 minutes of physical play from both teams. FSU lead shots by a margin of 16-6, but OU held the Seminoles to seven shots on goal while firing four of their own throughout the contest. Sooner goalkeepers made six total saves against Florida State, including five from starter Kaitlyn Fahrner.

OU got its first shot on goal of the match in the 13th minute, when Madison Kinzer connected with a header off a corner kick from Laura Rayfield. FSU goalkeeper Cassie Miller intercepted the ball, making the save to keep the Sooners off the board.

After several close attempts, Florida State struck first in the 22nd minute of play. Megan Campbell launched a long throw-in that Dagny Brynjarsdottir slipped past OU's Fahrner for the first goal of the match.

Oklahoma got a break when Seminole Kristin Grubka took out Lizzie Luallin in the box on a breakaway in the 34th minute. Luallin was awarded a penalty kick, but Miller made the save again on the left side to prevent OU's equalizer attempt.

Halftime adjustments brought new life to the Sooners, who battled back in the second half to hold FSU to only four shots while firing three of their own. The Oklahoma defense began to control the Seminoles' chances, giving OU more opportunities on the other end of the field as they searched for the equalizer.

Freshman Rasha Roberts fired her second shot of the match in the 55th minute. Devin Barrett sent in a cross from the right side to Roberts, who couldn't evade Miller's defense on the effort.

OU swapped out goalkeepers in the 81st minute as sophomore transfer Kaitlyn Keith saw her first playing time of the season. Keith responded in a big way, promptly making an athletic save on a shot from Brynjarsdottir to keep FSU from extending its lead. Sooners poured forward looking for a goal as the match's final minutes wound off the clock, but FSU would hang on to its 1-0 lead and make it the final score.

The Sooners close a challenging weekend of play at 1-1-0 overall, defeating No. 6 Florida on Friday night before falling to the second-ranked Seminoles. OU moves to 2-1-1 on the season, holding wins over the Gators and Oklahoma State and a tie with Utah.

Oklahoma opens its 2014 road schedule next weekend with a non-conference match against Nebraska. The Sooners and the Huskers are set to meet on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5:30 p.m. CT. OU will return home on Sunday, squaring off with Central Arkansas at 1 p.m. in Norman.

Cowgirls Lose To Fifth-Ranked Florida

STILLWATER, Okla. – Three second-half goals sealed Oklahoma State's fate Sunday afternoon as No. 5 Florida handed the Cowgirls a 4-0 loss at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex.

With the loss, OSU fell to 0-4-0 on the season, while the Gators are now 3-1-0.

The Cowgirls, playing without two of their starting forwards as well as a key reserve at the position due to injury, were outshot in the contest by a 16-8 margin and shut out for the second time this season.

“We keep losing players in the attacking third and lost another one today so we're moving defenders and midfielders into attacking positions and it shows,” said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. “The effort is there, the kids are trying hard. The score line flattered Florida. At 2-0, we put up another attacking kid to try and cause them trouble so that's on us. I told the kids the score line at the end is irrelevant because we have to go try and score.

“But looking at the statistics in this one, it's a lot more of a game than Friday night (vs. Florida State), it just didn't show on the scoreboard.”

Florida wasted little time in taking an early lead as just 2:11 into the match, Tessa Andujar delivered a cross into the box that Havana Solaun sent to the far post to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.

That score remained at intermission as UF outshot the Cowgirls by a 6-1 margin in the game's first 45 minutes.

OSU's attack picked up in the second half and created several scoring chances. The first of those came just under 10 minutes in when Allie Stephenson blasted a shot from 35-yards out that was saved over the crossbar by UF goalie Valerie Tysinger.

In the 71st minute, it was Miriam Rhinehart with an opportunity for the Cowgirls after she received a cross from Niki McKnight before sending her chance over the goal.

Minutes later, Florida doubled its lead when All-American Savannah Jordan found the back of the net from five-yards out off another assist by Andujar.

The Gators added a pair of late goals in the 87th and 90th minutes to finish off the victory.

OSU looks to get in the win column next weekend at the Sun Devil Desert Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Cowgirls will face tourney host Arizona State Friday at 6 p.m. (CST) before a Sunday match against Arizona.

Tulsa's Barrett Scores in 101st Minute for Double-Overtime Win

Edwardsville, Illinois – Tulsa senior Akeil Barrett scored the game-winning goal in the 101st minute to give the Golden Hurricane a 2-1 double-overtime victory over SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon at Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Illinois. TU moved to 1-1 on the season, while SIUE fell to 0-2 overall.

“We played a pretty good game,” Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. “I thought the guys responded well when we went a goal down, especially in the tough conditions. We wanted to get better in the final third and we did that today. We created more opportunities and had good improvement from Friday's game.”

The first half ticked off the clock scoreless, but Christian Volesky put the Cougars on the board at the 62:35 mark as he tapped in a goal from eight yards out.

Senior Austin Neil evened the score just over 10 minutes later as he scored on a pass from Abé Matamoros from 15 yards out on the right side.

Barrett's goal came at the 100:31 mark off an assist from Neil also from the right side.

Tulsa had a 23-12 lead in shots, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 3-2 lead in corner kicks.

Neil had a team-best six shots, four of which were on goal, while freshman Aymar Sigue also had six attempts. Barrett, Tony Rocha and Ray Saari all had three attempts. Jake McGuire played all 100:31 between the posts and had four saves.

Tulsa will return to action next weekend, hosting the Holiday Inn Hurricane Classic on September 5 and 7, featuring Virginia, CSUN, UAB and TU. The Golden Hurricane will take on Virginia on Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m., and CSUN on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.. All games of the tournament will be played at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
