The “black mass” that we've been talking about for weeks took place in Oklahoma City on Sunday night. Only about 40 people showed up to the Civic Center for the ritualistic Satanic event.

Outside, however, hundreds gathered to protest the message of that mass.

An OKC devil worshipper planned the event, which even has drawn a lawsuit from an archbishop. Archbishop Paul Coakley asked a district judge to stop the black mass because he claims Satanic priest Adam Daniels stole a blessed communion wafer from the Catholic church to use in his ritual sacrifice to Satan.

After the lawsuit was filed an attorney representing the Satanic church later returned the wafer to a Catholic priest.

Daniels represents the Dakhma of Angra Maimyu, and a crew from Nightline was at the event to chronicle it for national television.

In Tulsa, Catholics held a holy hour of prayer in an exhibition of public worship to counteract the black mass in OKC.

It contained moments of prayer and reflection as a way to combat what some fear is causing a resurgence of evil close to home.

“My reaction was, I was not really scared but I was upset because I'm from Louisiana, and I've always heard that Oklahoma was the Bible Belt, and to have the city officials in Oklahoma City say ‘Well, First Amendment, we can't really do anything,'" Teal said.

“This is not beauty, the black mass, it's really quite ugly and I don't know why anyone would promote it," Tulsa Catholic Diocese Bishop Edward Slattery said.

Many who attended the holy hour hoped that it is the first and last black mass in Oklahoma.

“Here in Tulsa, we're rallying with the archbishop to try to get it,” Teal said. “I know tonight it's being held, but to try to get black masses stopped in the near future."

It provided a chance for Catholics to band together in their beliefs.

"I think this is an opportunity for them to express themselves in reaction to this black mass which is really cursing Jesus Christ and the blessed sacrament," Slattery said.

Several hundred people raised their voices and their prayers not just to counteract the black mass in Oklahoma City -- but to pray for those participating in it as well.

"There are those that are lost, and our job as Christians and as Catholics is to pray for them,” Knights of Columbus Stephen Knoy said.

The black mass in OKC kicked off with a band, then Daniels, fully dressed in his black and red robe, introduced his wife and brought out a ceremony table and explained how the Satanic ritual would work.

Daniels said one goal of the black mass was to destroy the fear of the Catholic church by mocking the items they use. At one point, the group "blessed" an adult toy.

The black mass has lasted for a few hours, and while our sister station News 9 was outside doing its live report, an "exorcism" took place. News 9 was the only local crew allowed inside to film the event.
