Classes in the Union City Public School district are canceled after three confirmed cases of meningitis.

Union City Public Schools prides itself as a "small school environment." Now, parents within the district are being urged to get their children tested. This comes after three confirmed cases of meningitis among students. Officials have not confirmed if it's bacterial or viral meningitis.

Meningitis can spread through close contact, including coughing, kissing, sneezing, and sharing food and drinks.

Symptoms typically appear within three to seven days of exposure and can include fever, chills, sensitivity to light, severe headache, a stiff neck, and confusion

While most cases of meningitis can be effectively treated with antibiotics, doctors advise it's important to begin treatment as soon as possible.

Still no word yet on when classes in Union City will resume.

State Superintendent Janet Barresi released the following statement,

"When the health and safety of children are concerned, schools must always defer to the side of caution. We commend Union City for its quick, decisive action."
