Mayes County Sheriff's deputies are learning some new tactics during a training exercise on Friday.  The deputies were given real life scenarios to test deputies' reactions to extreme situations.

In one situation deputies learned and experienced a situation with guns drawn. The good news was it was only a training exercise, designed to feel very real.

"It'd be based off of a call that we normally see whether it be burglary in progress or a fight or a suicidal subject or something of that nature - we will respond to that call and are expected to act accordingly," said sheriff's deputy Alan Davis.

The State of Oklahoma requires 24 hours of annual training - but Sheriff Mike Reed says to stay sharp- his deputies are going above the basics.

"Over the last two weeks, our deputies have put in 10-12 hour days, we are looking at 100- 120 hours of training that they will be receiving," said Sheriff Mike Reed.

It is invaluable and deputies say it is eye opening, because they expose weaknesses and highlight strengths.

"Yeah, you learn that you are kind of behind the eight ball on those types of things. You really gotta be able to on top of your game to come out ahead and win and at any time something could happen there is a lot of officer safety issues," said deputy Alan Davis.

And as they come up - the deputies are given survival tips.

"I believe the better the deputies are trained the better we serve the public its just that simple the better they will be prepare dto handle any situation that arises in Mayes County," said Sheriff MIke Reed."
